Fun With Katherine, Part 1

Katherine flew into Barcelona on Saturday and hopped the train to Narbonne, which is the nearest largish town to me. While it sounds like a snap when you look at the map, she described it as an intermediate travel experience, not a breeze for the inexperienced traveler. Being fluent in Spanish was definitely a plus. Since she went to JFK immediately from school, she calculated that her trip had ten legs.

She was a trooper, though. We did a quick tour of the marvelous covered market and picked up cheese, of course, and some enormous figs, had a nice al fresco lunch and visited the cathedral, which some have compared to the Palace of the Popes in Avignon. Since she’d been up for over 24 hours at that point, that was about all the culture she could absorb, so we decamped to Capestang so she could have a nap.

This is a magnificent cathedral. It fascinates me to think about how such architectural feats were accomplished in their time — in this case, the 12th century.  Narbonne is a city worth returning to when I have more time. There are Roman ruins and artifacts, more markets, and interesting architecture.

Having Katherine here for a few days makes me very happy, and so do these figs!
